This series comprises program records related to The American Lutheran Church (TALC) mission work in India. They were generated or retained by the office of the Secretary for South Asia, South Pacific, and Madagascar of TALC's Division for World Mission and Inter-Church Cooperation (DWMIC). Records are from 1913-1986 with the majority dating from 1975-1984. This material was generated through the course of regular business conducted by the DWMIC as it pertained to its involvement in mission work in India. Types of records include typewritten and handwritten business correspondence, meeting minutes, financial records, topical reports, proceedings from consultations, and informational articles. The bulk of the records is business correspondence. This series is divided into subseries related to education, medical work, the South Andhra Lutheran Church (SALC), the Andhra Lutheran Conference, Inter-Church Service Agency, and general subject matter. Records of note include those related to the Kodaikanal School and the fundraising organization associated with it, the Kodaikanal Woodstock Foundation and India partner churches including SALC and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of India. In addition to these records there are those related to the colleges with which the TALC worked including the United Theological College, Andhra Christian Theological College, Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Gossner College, and Serampore College. The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
